All Alone in the Night

But way back at the end of the last century, one of the first sci-fi fandoms did have the internet, complete with online spoilers! That fandom was centered around Babylon 5, and though we don’t talk much about Babylon 5 now, the narrative structure of the show, in tandem with internet discussion, essentially created the model for TV fandom today.

As much as I’m a fan of other shows and movies, B5 has been, and always will be, the top. Every modern genre TV shows owes its production to B5. While Buffy gets the credit for changing modern dialogue (and, rightly so), B5 changed how writers and producers make TV series. B5 showed you can make an epic story, on budget, on time, with intelligent, 3-dimensional characters, all of which had never been done before.

With the 20th anniversary coming up, here’s to hoping for new B5 blurays (though, i have no idea how they’d do this, honestly).

I don’t think they could do Blu-Rays, or something. I remember my Uncle (who is a dear for getting me into this show)...
